Concrete.... It is a must for providing a simpler life, for maintaining your property value, for having the appearance that you value the area where you live. It is not something you consistently need to purchase or replace but, to help maintain its durability does require a little maintenance to stay on tap with the preceding paragraph.
That being said it all starts with the quality of the installation of the concrete no matter how big or small the area is. Concrete is durable on its own but, to have lasting effectiveness requires that the sub grade below the concrete have been properly prepared. If needed based on the soil type and water run off you have you need a compacted shale grade, a gravel grade and other vapor protection pending the end use of the concrete. Then comes the concrete support system... rebar it is the best and longest lasting strength support in the middle of the concrete, properly placed can add excellent durability over the life of the concrete. Are there cheaper ways of doing this? Yes but, That cheaper way comes at a cost down the line that can effectively double and triple the cost down the line in repairs and maintenance and the worst... tearing it out and doing it in a quality standard the endures the test of time.
